Née en 1942 à Memphis et abandonnée par sa mère à l'âge de six ans, Aretha est élevée par son père. Sous la tutelle de sa tante, la célébrissime Clara Ward, chanteuse de gospel, elle commence à chanter dans l'église de son père. Mahalia Jackson et Sam Cooke, des amis de la famille, l'encourage alors vivement à entamer une carrière. Agrémenté de plus d'une trentaine d'extraits musicaux, d'interviews de célébrités, d'amis et de membres de sa famille, ce documentaire retrace l'ensemble de la carrière d'Aretha Franklin depuis ses premiers disques de gospel, son arrivée chez Columbia, sa signature avec Atlantic où elle deviendra l'incontestable 'Reine de la Soul' en 1967, et son passage chez Arista.
